National strike threat over workplace laws

A national union leader says there will be widespread strikes if a South Australian
member is sent to jail under the Federal Government's industrial relations laws.
Ark Tribe has made his second appearance at the Elizabeth Magistrates Court,
surrounded by union members.

The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) says the federal
laws strip construction workers of rights every other Australian worker has, such
as the right to remain silent when questioned.

Mr Tribe is now facing the possibility of jail time for failing to attend to answer
questions at the Australian Building and Construction Commission about a stop-
work meeting.

The court heard Mr Tribe intends to plead not guilty and stand trial.
CFMEU national secretary Dave Noonan says there will be huge consequences
if Mr Tribe is sent to jail.

"There will be a nationwide mobilisation and response that will continue until
that worker is released," he said.

A pre-trial hearing has been scheduled for October.
