Kennett fronts tribunal over gay comments

Posted Mon Sep 7, 2009

Former Victorian premier Jeff Kennett has arrived at a Sydney tribunal for a
mediation hearing because of comments he made last year about the sacking
of a gay football trainer.

Mr Kennett, who is currently chairman of the anti-depression organisation
Beyond Blue, made the comments in a Melbourne newspaper after the dismissal
of a gay AFL trainer from a Victorian football club.

In a Melbourne newspaper, Mr Kennett compared homosexuality with
paedophilia, saying the club had done the right thing because the trainer
was in charge of a group of young boys.

Mr Kennett is currently meeting with anti-discrimination campaigner Gary
Burns and an official from the New South Wales Administrative Decisions
Tribunal in a closed mediation hearing.

WCV's: Why does Kennett get a closed hearing? Is this normal practice?
