Man trapped after being sucked into chicken processing machine

Article from: Herald Sun, April 09, 2009

A TEEN was sucked into a chicken processor at a Thomastown factory this
morning, before emergency services managed to free him.

The 19-year-old La Ionica worker was cleaning a chicken neck trimming
machine when his arm got caught and he was sucked into the machine
about 1.30am.

Firefighters took about an hour to dismantle the machine to free the man’s
arm, while paramedics treated the man for his injuries.

The man was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.

Acting Sgt Mandy Subramaniam said a Worksafe investigator was at
the scene and an investigation into the accident would be launched.

Sgt Subramaniam said the full details of the accident hadn’t been determined
yet, but that the man had been stuck in the machine for a period of time.
“It’s taken a little while,” she said. Police investigations are continuing.

La Ionica Poultry factory management refused to comment about the
accident at the scene.

Worksafe is investigating the incident.
