Glazier dies in 18-metre fall

September 17, 2010

A 48-YEAR-OLD glazier has died after an 18-metre fall from an aerial work platform at Jells Park Primary School in Melbourne's east.

The man was employed by Dingley Glass and the work was part of the federal government's school building program.

Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union furnishing products division state secretary Leo Skourdoumbis said the death was ''another tragic incident in the construction industry and further reason why unions need to be very vigilant about health and safety on site''. He said unions would conduct a safety audit at all sites of head contractor Hansen Yuncken over the next 24 hours and no work would occur.

WorkSafe Victoria will investigate. ''Falls from height are one of the biggest workplace killers in Victoria,'' said WorkSafe Victoria acting construction director Allan Beacom. "We know that the risk of injury from a fall increases significantly for falls above a height of two metres.''

Seven Victorian workers have died from falls from height since the start of 2009, with three this year.
