The NSW Industrial Relations Commission orders the reinstatement of two
prison officers who set up a Facebook page. (ABC News)
The New South Wales Industrial Relations Commission has ordered the
reinstatement of two prison officers who were sacked after setting up a
Facebook page critical of jail privatisation.
The two were among seven officers disciplined for criticism of senior
management and the NSW Government before the privatisation plans
for Cessnock and Parklea jails were scrapped.
The Department of Corrective Service's own investigation found the officers
had engaged in misconduct by posting sexist and defamatory comments
targeting a number of executive officers.
The Public Service Association says the department sought disciplinary
action against the officers and has been pursuing the matter for the past
two years.
Stewart Little from the PSA says the Department could have spent the
legal costs on something else.
"It just seems strange to us that after two years the department is still hell-bent
on chasing these people for comments that they made over two years ago," he said.
"And it just clearly looks to us that this is just a vendetta against people who
opposed the privatisation of corrective facilities across the state."
