Nick Hamilton, 16 May 2009,
MELBOURNE—Fifty Australia Post workers and supporters protested
outside Australia Post’s head office on May 13. The rally was organised
by the Communications Electrical Plumbing Union communications division,
and protested against the appalling treatment that injured postal workers
receive from their employer. Protesters called for Australia Post’s self-
insurance licence to be revoked.
Australia Post investigates the accidents occurring in its own workplace,
with minimal oversight. This conflict of interest means proper investigations
don’t happen, as Australia Post seeks to minimise employees’ compensation
claims. At the protest, real accidents and Australia Post’s treatment of
workers were raised to illustrate what happens to injured workers.
