Over 150 attend WorkSafe Victoria’s first anti-bullying seminar

150 people attended a WorkSafe Victoria seminar on bullying which took place on 25 March 2010.
The event was the first in a series of seminars across the state providing guidance for employers, managers and supervisors on what they need to do to prevent and respond to bullying.

According to WorkSafe Victoria, it is fielding around 30 phone calls a day on workplace bullying, with around ten percent of calls resulting in WorkSafe inspectors going out to the workplace to make further inquiries.

Issues covered during the seminar included identifying risk of workplace bullying and taking steps to deal with problem areas. Attendees questioned a panel of WorkSafe representatives on issues including cyber bullying, substantiating bullying claims, and what to do when bullying is a part of workplace culture.

WorkSafe Victoria has touted the turnout as an indication of workplaces’ determination to get on top of bullying. Bullying is best dealt with by taking steps to prevent it before it becomes a risk to health and safety.

If you have suffered a really serious injury due to extreme VERBAL bullying, over a long period, FORGET relying on WorkSafe. If you search their website for bullying prosecutions (Feb. 2011), you'll discover they NEVER prosecute a bully, unless physical bullying has occurred. The problem is, once they commence an investigation into verbal bullying, they will drop it and you will be completely let down at the conclusion. Their excuse will be they "can't prove bullying beyond a reasonable doubt", even though they may say this does not mean bullying has not happened. They even provide information to the employer along these lines!
