Cyclists made the grim discovery on Yarragon/Shady Creek Road just after ten thirty this morning.

"We believe sometime before ten thirty this morning we've had a semi trailer travelling north on Yarragon/Shady Creek Road and it's run off the road to the left and struck some trees." Said Sergeant Steve Mansell, Victoria Police.

The driver of the milk tanker, a 45-year old man from Moe, died at the scene.

Police and Worksafe launched their investigations, as heavy haulage equipment worked to remove the wreckage from an embankment.

A second milk truck was brought in to siphon the tanker's load.

"We're still investigating whether or not he had picked up milk, we are about to try to decanter the milk that was in his semi and we'll get some idea from that and his running logs what his movements were this morning." He said.

The Environment Protection Authority has also been part of the clean up which stretched well into the afternoon.

"We've had a lot of assistance from the SES today, CFA, we've got two heavy haulage trucks and the EPA looking after any potential damage to the environment." Sergeant Mansell said.

Anyone who saw the tanker travelling along on Yarragon/Shady Creek Road is urged to contact Warragul Police.
