THE ALP faces an interesting choice over what to do with MP Theo
Theophanous if the committal hearing finds he does not have to stand
trial for rape.
Mr Theophanous yesterday lodged his nomination form for pre-selection
showing he intends to return to politics if the hearing into the rape charges,
which is ongoing, goes his way.
However, the ALP hierarchy and some factional leaders have already
appeared to cut him adrift to allocate his spot on the upper house ticket to
someone else.
His task, if the judge finds he has no case to answer, will be to convince the
ALP's national executive, which is conducting all Victorian upper house
preselections, that he has more to offer in the political world.
